W-Bridge
The W-Bridge is a BEAM R&D project exploring super-lightweight construction for small bridge installations. Utilising 3mm thick perforated steel (and very little else) the W-Bridge is related to the Z-Bridge modular structure developed by the same team of BEAM architects and CAKE engineering. Both systems employ folded upstand girder to provide stiffness creating distinctive ‘Z’ and ‘W’ profiles respectively. As a result, both structures achieve a SCORBS rating of A+. The W-folded sheet returns to form the deck plate without additional sub-structure. The first built iteration features a stepped configuration to account for local level changes. The layered and shaped perforated sheets create striking moiré patterns that emphasise the brightly painted interior.
