Carrowmore Beach Bridge

Carrowmore Beach is a popular sweep of sandy coastline facing into Clew Bay in Co. Mayo. The project is designed to connect the community of Louisburgh to the beach following the Bunowen River as an alternative short-cut to the existing road route which has no pedestrian provision. Land ownership constraints necessitate a range of minor crossings as well as a larger river crossing at the beach end of the route.

A 32m long footbridge over the Bunowen River provides a visible marker for the project and trail access from adjacent beach parking. The design is a walk-through unbraced tied-arch structure, arranged for flood resilience. Painted steel arches inclined out from the deck with box profile stays provide lateral stiffness against raised water levels.
