Anacostia Metro Bridge
The pedestrian and cycle bridge is planned to connect the Barry Farm neighbourhood redevelopment in Ward 8 with the WMATA Anacostia Metro and bus interchange. Spanning across Suitland Parkway and the bus station apron, the 200m long bridge follows a curving alignment to provide an axial link with the Barry Farm street plan. A circular approach ramp at the congested metro end delivers pedestrians directly to the station entrance.
Within sight of the bridge, Suitland Parkway connects to I-295 and the approach to Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, BEAM Architect’s earlier project in the District. The Metro Bridge therefore acts as a flag to the evolving Barry Farm community and a primer for the gateway crossing to the city core; its twin tied-arch structure providing a tangible visual link.
